#11.  LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver

LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy is a grumpy old man.  He likes things that grumpy old men like (the ‘old days’, his hometown, a good sammich), and dislikes things that grumpy old men dislike (‘whippersnappers’).  He is also basically the main man responsible for most people ever hearing of ‘techno’ (he played Daft Punk at CBGB before you did.  I mean, you probably still have never played Daft Punk at CBGB have you?  It’s not even there anymore, so you lost your chance.  Way to go).

The songs on his second album, Sound of Silver are mostly not quite the kind of dancey, thumpy songs he usually makes.  There’s even one that’s just him on a piano (until it gets loud and crunchy and awesome at the end).  They’re mainly about getting old, and maybe not seeing your friends around anymore, and missing all the fun you had when you were a kid, and yet nobody should want to be a kid again because kids are stupid and to hell with them.

We should all aspire to grow up to be James Murphy.  But in the meantime he will thank you to boogie on off his yard.

Heck yeah LCD Soundsystem.

The “Married Life” montage from Up. I dare you to find a more affecting sequence in any film from this year.

I didn’t expect to see a scene like this when I went to see Up but it made me feel both really happy and really sad at the same time.

Day Embettering Video of the Day: Our favorite scary lady in the whole wide world, Amanda Fucking Palmer, recently asked filmmaking friend Michael Pope to help her put together a video of her lip-dubbing Tegan and Sara’s latest single, “Hell,” while wandering the streets of Manhattan/Brooklyn and doing what she does best: Scaring the bejeezus out of passers-by.

Palmer says:

Some of the best parts of this experience are nowhere on the video… like the wonderful expressions and reactions on people’s faces that the camera didn’t catch. The guy in Union Square who bear-hugged me spontaneously was one of my favorites. Only in New York could you do something like this and be either ignored or celebrated. Anywhere else on the planet they’d be calling the men in little white coats. And the cops I followed and sang to didn’t even blink an eye. What nice cops!”

AFP lip-dubbing > anyone else doing anything else.

Pretty entertaining. Also, just got tickets to see Tegan and Sara in February, so I’m pretty excited.

I feel like this song is catchy enough that it just might work.

The Frames - When Your Mind’s Made Up

Haven’t heard this one in a while. Saw the Swell Season at Bonnaroo the summer after sophomore year. Now I want to rewatch Once.
